Check the complete specifications against the rider’s record and horse ownership before building the 2027 show plan.
Put a rules check on the calendar
Before next season’s show calendar fills up, there’s a useful piece of homework for Junior Hunter families. On October 28, 2026, US Equestrian announced approved specifications for the 2027 Adequan/USEF Junior Hunter National Championships. The changes affect planning as well as what happens in the ring. This is national governing-body news; it is not an entry confirmation for any individual rider.
What the announcement changes
An added exception allows athletes who have competed at 1.30 meters or above during the qualifying period and through the championship’s conclusion to compete one large and one small horse they own in the 3-foot-3 Junior Hunter section. A horse may compete at only one coast’s championship and in one Junior Hunter section.
The Handy Hunter order will be randomized; changing it requires Show Committee approval. Sections with fewer than ten entries will be combined with another section at the same height, with prize money reallocated evenly among the remaining classes in that section.
USEF lists the East championship for June 23–27, 2027, at Kentucky Horse Park, Lexington, Kentucky, and the West for July 29–August 1 at HITS Del Mar Horsepark, California.
Make the questions specific
Our planning suggestion is to gather the rider’s competition record, the horse’s ownership information, and the intended section before asking an eligibility question. A useful example would be: a rider has competed in a higher jumper class and hopes to show an owned horse in the lower Junior Hunter height. Ask USEF how the complete specifications apply to those exact circumstances. A brief news summary should not become your only eligibility check.
Keep a dated copy of the official answer with your planning notes. That gives the family and trainer the same reference when discussing entries, travel, and the horse’s workload. It also helps avoid a decision based on somebody’s recollection of last season.
Leave room for the horse
A championship goal works best when it fits the horse and rider’s present ability. Build rest, ordinary schooling, and flexibility into the calendar before committing to a long sequence of shows. A qualification opportunity is a choice to assess with your trainer, not an obligation to add more competition.
