Two different stories at one venue
Fair Hill International’s organizer update makes a distinction that matters: the future of the Maryland five-star is a separate question from the three-star and Young Event Horse competitions. The CCI5* paused in 2026. Select Event Group announced on October 8 that it would not organize the 2027 five-star.
What remains in focus
FHI says it supports efforts to find a viable long-term funding model and wants the three-star and Young Event Horse East Coast Championships to remain at Fair Hill in 2027 and beyond. That is an intention, rather than a confirmed five-star return date.
For the Maryland community
For spectators, volunteers, and local businesses, the practical lesson is to check the organizer’s current calendar before making plans. A familiar venue name does not guarantee the same competition format, ticketing, or spectator services each year.
Why the distinction matters to local horse people
For a Maryland spectator, “Fair Hill” can mean a place, an organizer, or a particular competition. Those meanings are easy to blur in conversation. When you share an announcement with a friend, include the exact class and year, rather than treating every development at the venue as a change to the five-star.
This also helps keep expectations realistic for volunteers and businesses. A smaller competition can still be meaningful to the people taking part, while needing a different level of staffing, services, and spectator planning. The question is what the organizer has actually committed to, not whether the venue still matters.
A useful way to follow the next announcement
Keep three questions together: who is organizing, which competitions are confirmed, and what dates and services have been announced? A statement of support answers a different question from a confirmed event listing. Check the date on an announcement before passing it along; a search engine may still surface an earlier plan.
For your own calendar, save the organizer’s information page as well as the event name. Add a reminder to recheck it before buying travel or making a business commitment. That small habit makes it easier to update a plan when an announcement changes.
The community perspective
MDhorse will follow the confirmed decisions as they emerge. Our aim is to give Maryland horse people enough context to understand what changed, without turning a proposed return into a promise. Readers can support the local equestrian community while still asking clear questions about the next event.
