Measuring Your Horse for a Blanket
If you are purchasing a new blanket, the best way to measure for the size is to place the end of the tape measure or string (depending upon the horse’s sensitivity) in the middle of the chest and level with the shoulders. It is then extended around the side and all the way to the back of the hind leg or tail. That measurement is then the size of your blanket. For instance, if your horse measures 74 inches, then your blanket size becomes 74. If you haven’t got the exact same size, then round to the next larger size – which is more easily adjustable. Note that depending upon where the blanket is made, the size ranges vary. For instance, those made in North America increase in size in two (2) inch increments, while those in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, or Australia increase in three (3) inch increments. So the 74 may work for a blanket made in North America, but you may have to order one that is a 75 if it has been made in the UK. For some of the larger horses - your drafts or draft crosses - you may have to look at a custom made one.
