Anhidrosis
This is a condition that occurs when horses are unable to sweat "in response to appropriate stimuli, such as work, heat, or excitement." This means that a horse is not capable of cooling himself via the most effective of his mechanisms - evaporation. While veterinarians are unsure of what causes it, they have associated it with the horse having undergone a heat stress related event. horses most susceptible to this condition are those that have been moved from cooler locations to warmer ones, especially if they have not been properly acclimated to the new environment. Though some horse owners have noted some improvement with electrolyte supplements, there is no known treatment. Most horses recover their ability to sweat when moved back to cooler climates. Unfortunately, the problem will most likely return if they are again moved back to warmer regions.
