Synchronous Diaphragmatic Flutter (SDF)
Synchronous Diaphragmatic Flutter (SDF), or thumps, is found in horses with an electrolyte imbalance, a situation resulting from substantial fluid loss associated with sweating. These horses have a low serum calcium. The thumps are "characterized by spasmodic contraction of one or both flanks, forceful enough to felt or heard by the rider." It is actually caused by spasms in the diaphragm in sync with the heartbeat.
