Hyperthermia
This condition occurs when the horse generates heat faster than it can be expended.

Symptoms
  • elevated body temperature (above 103oF)
  •
  • excessive sweating
  •
  • increased respirations - "panting" or "blowing"
  •
  • agitated or restless behavior

Treatment
Immediately stop all work with the horse, and hose down or sponge off the horse to assist with the cooling process giving special attention to the head, neck, and legs. It is recommended to alternate walking and hosing down in order to promote the circulation, allowing the cooled blood at the surface to reach the core. You can also help with the convection process by walking him outside if there is a breeze or letting a fan blow cool air over him.

If the following occurs, you should seek veterinary assistance immediately:
  • respirations do not slow down (i.e., recovery does not occur with the usual period)
  •
  • sweating stops, but is still hot to touch
  •
  • behavior becomes disoriented or confused
  •
  • muscle tremors, cramps, or weakness
Veterinary care is urgent at this point, because these signs indicate that heat stroke is imminent, and the horse must be cooled as quickly as possible.
