Days End Farm Horse Rescue Foster Program |
For those individuals who are not sure yet whether they want to adopt or may just want to spend time with a horse without actually owning it yet, DEFHR offers the Foster Care Program. This program provides the opportunity to bond with a horse and learn all that horse care entails, including grooming, feeding, and cost of ownership. There are three levels of foster care, which involve graduated fees for each level – Plan A includes a once-a-week visit for grooming and care of the horse; Plan B involves the once a week visit with the addition of riding the horse once a week; and, Plan C covers most of the farrier care and feed for the horse you are fostering, in addition to helping with other expenses related to the fostered horse. Plan C also includes the opportunity to ride twice weekly. For both Plans B and C, individuals must prove that they are capable of riding the fostered horse that must itself be rideable. The Foster Program is an excellent first step towards adopting one of the residents. Although it is not a guarantee, since all the criteria for adoption must be met, those that provide foster care are given priority consideration once that horse becomes adoptable. Of course, the Foster Program also helps to alleviate some of DEFHR’s financial burden of caring for a particular horse, especially if it is one that is not able to be put up for adoption. |
