Days End Farm Horse Rescue Adoption Program
DEFHR’s Adoption Program allows those individuals interested in owning one of the horses to adopt the animal. In an effort to protect the best interests of the horse, DEFHR has established very strict criteria that the adopter must meet. For example, these horses can not be resold, given away, or used for breeding. They may not be relocated from the originally approved facility without the permission of DEFHR. If the adoption does not work out, for any reason, the horse must be returned to their farm. Also, DEFHR requires that any horse that is adopted must go to a home with at least one other horse, to ensure that these herd animals have the companionship they need. Though they do not advocate first-time horse buyers adopting one of these horses, they do offer a class, If Only Love Was Enough, to help those individuals learn the basic knowledge and skills for horse care and ownership.

The adoption includes the following steps:
  • After adopter submits completed questionnaire and $10.00 application fee, he or she schedules an appointment with DEFHR’s trainer(s) to establish compatibility between horse and rider. Once evaluated and rider deemed capable of working with horse alone, adopter must visit at least 2 more times to work with the horse.
  •
  • If horse and adopter deemed compatible, DEFHR schedules an appointment to inspect the facility where the horse will be kept to assess personnel’s knowledge of horse care, management of facility, and feeding of horses. They will also evaluate the fencing, buildings, and pastures to ensure safe and clean living arrangements. The adopter’s references will also be contacted.
  •
  • Once the facility evaluation and reference check is completed, DEFHR’s Board of Directors will assess all the data and arrive at a decision. DEFHR opts to reject a petition for adoption for any reason, and is not obligated to state any reason.
  •
  • If the adoption is approved, a final contract, which details terms and conditions, is completed. A tax-deductible donation ranging between $500 and $800 is requested, which will be used towards the care and rehabilitation of other horses that have suffered abuse and neglect.
  •
  • DEFHR reserves the right to transport the horse to the adopter’s facility, which will include a small fee, and to make unscheduled follow-up visits at least once a year. After three years, if DEFHR decides the placement is suitable for both adopter and horse, then the adopter assumes full ownership of the horse.

DEFHR emphasizes the importance of these follow-up visits. As they have pointed out, they currently do not have the “funds or manpower” to perform the inspections and follow-up visits in other states. For this reason, all adoptions are currently restricted to the State of Maryland.
