NOTICE!! Potential Increase in Horse Theft
MDhorse.com was recently notified that because of the severe drop in beef imports to Europe from the United Kingdom and elsewhere, there has been a drastic increase in the slaughterhouse prices paid for horses here in the United States – an increase seen most noticeably in Texas. With per pound prices at approximately $.80 per pound, "a 1,000 pound horse [is] worth $800 at the average killer market." These escalating costs have resulted in an increase in horse thefts, "especially in rural areas where horses are pastured outside." According to the report received, "horses can be slaughtered and on a freighter bound for Europe before the owner even knows the animal is gone."

We have not received confirmation of this problem directly affecting the Mid-Atlantic region, but MDhorse.com recommends that owners take precautionary steps to reduce the chances of horse theft. One such effort may be to notify neighbors in order that everyone can keep a watchful eye out for each other's horses.

MDhorse.com will continue to provide updates as they become available.
