WIHS Horses Stop Traffic!
How would you like to be taking a practice jump with your 16.2 hand Thoroughbred in the middle of F Street in downtown Washington, DC? Pretty exciting, right? That’s what the riders of the Washington International Horse Show are doing for their warm-up routine before heading down 6th street and into the MCI Center arena.

A closed off portion of F Street has 125 portable, covered stalls and a warm-up arena comprised of a thousand tons of dirt. It is quite an amazing site, seeing eight to ten horses at one time walking, trotting, cantering, and jumping in downtown DC – not something most Washingtonians think about witnessing as they go through their day. What is probably more incredible was how well the horses took it all in stride. The blaring horns, wailing sirens, and general city commotion didn’t seem to phase them a bit. Granted, these horses are used to the competition atmosphere – used to the crowd and the associated noises – but even those of the “cream of the crop” aren’t used to taking practice jumps on one of the city streets of DC.
