Great Strides offers equine-assisted psychotherapy (individual and group) to children (age 10 and older) and adults. Services are provided by licensed mental health professionals, certified therapeutic riding instructors and specially trained horses. We are located at Taylor Made Stables in Damascus, Maryland.
This form of treatment is particularly effective at engaging young people who are resistant to working with a therapist in a traditional office setting. It is also effective for individuals seeking an experiential or adjunct form of treatment which can promote healing on many different levels. The equine-assisted mental health services offered incorporate interactive experiences that are specially designed to promote emotional healing, build confidence, improve social skills and help clients make positive changes in their lives. Our unique farm environment enables clients to address treatment issues on many different experiential levels that they might not ordinarily access in a therapist’s office. Goals may be emotional, behavioral, social, mental, or spiritual in nature. Activities may be mounted on the horse, or unmounted, depending on individual needs, and no prior horse experience is necessary! |

| Venango Area Riding for the Handicapped Association (VARHA) is a nonprofit organization that offers therapeutic riding for 60 to 100 riders of various physical and mental disabilities. VARHA has also started a program for at-risk youth and families at risk, and it is having tremendous benefits for everyone involved. With over 20 years in existence, they are growing by leaps and bounds. VARHA would appreciate any donations of horses, tack, equipment, old trophies (the riders love to receive them), and scholarship funds. Volunteers are also always needed and appreciated! |
